Imposter Syndrome is a state of mind where a person feels inadequate and doubts his/her abilities. Many times people who step out of their comfort zone often feel like they are not achieving anything and consequently, feel like a fraud. I am pretty sure that at some point, everyone of us has had this feeling of inadequacy and inefficiency and maybe you're still having it.

In Episode 5 of Season 5, I had a wonderful conversation with Elena Pastore, who is a Soft Skills and Leadership coach by profession. She wonderfully explained all the things related to Imposter Syndrome and she even shared her own story of Imposter Syndrome.

So as per the conversation with her, I believe the 3 steps below would be really helpful to those who are contending with imposter syndrome.

  1. Realization:

Realizing is the very first step to overcome this state of mind. If you have the feelings of being inadequate or being inefficient then you are having Imposter Syndrome. But there is nothing to be fearful of, it's okay if you have come to this realization. Having Imposter Syndrome, I believe is the sign of growing up, as we step out of comfort zone we are going to face it and we all will overcome eventually.
  2. Examination:

Once you have realized that you do feel like an Imposter, examine why these feelings are coming and think about the things which you are doing well in. It can be anything, your office work, something from your personal relationship or something which you are passionate about. I remember when I was feeling like an Imposter in my new work culture, I always reflected on my teaching, as that is what I am good at. Today when I have these feelings, I also consider the great motivation I receive from my podcast.
So examine where are these feelings coming from and also make sure to examine the places you are doing good.
  3. Implementation:

Once you have indentified and examined, try to leverage your strengths from the things which you are already doing well, to the things where you feel like you you are inadequately performing or those that need improvement. I am not saying it is easy, it will take time but eventually I know you will do it.

So, these are the three steps which I believe I understood from the episode with Elena Pastore on the topic of "Dealing with Imposter Syndrome". Apart from these, if you are completely new to the work culture or a fresher in the work environment always remember to ask questions. If you do not ask questions, then you are liable for mistakes. So, make sure to NOT BE AFRAID to ask QUESTIONS.

To conclude this, I will say that it is completely normal to have this state of mind, but with proper motivation and support from others a person can easily overcome Imposter Syndrome. If you know someone who is in this state of mind, then make sure to share this article with them. I hope it will be of great benefit to you and those in your network.
