ExpertsConnect Ep. 4: Understanding Colorectal Cancer

Did you know that colorectal cancer is the third most leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the world (Rawla, et al., 2019)? More specifically, Rawla et al., (2019) have elucidated the role of dietary (e.g., red meat consumption) and lifestyle behaviours (physical inactivity, smoking tobacco, and excessive alcohol use) in addition to obesity as driving factors behind the development of colorectal cancer.

In this episode of ExpertsConnect, we had a conversation concerning colorectal cancer with a medical doctor specializing in family medicine, Dr. Sheree Sharpe.

Our discussion points included answers to the following questions.

  1. What is colorectal cancer?
  2. What are the differences between colorectal cancer, colon cancer, and rectal cancer?
  3. What are the potential causes and risks factors of colorectal cancer?
  4. What are the signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer?
  5. How is colorectal cancer detected?
  6. How can one reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer?
