Before you start
Hosting live classes needs the Live class tutor role. If you don't have it yet, open Live classes in the studio and send a request. See Getting started as a creator.
Live classes run in your browser: you and your learners don't need to install anything. You need a camera, a microphone and a stable internet connection.
Create the class
- Open Live classes and press Create a new live class.
- In Info & Class sessions, open Live class information and fill in the Name, Space, Description, Learning objectives, Categories and Hash tags.
- Upload a wide, uncluttered image in the Banner image tab.
Plan your sessions
A live class is a series of sessions: one for each time you meet.
- Open Class sessions and press Create new class session.
- In Edit class session, give it a title and add the agenda, notes or material learners need before, during or after the session.
- In Session schedule, pick the start date and time and the duration in minutes, then press Save.
- Put slides and handouts in Session attachments.
- Repeat for each session, and drag them into order.
Learners see each session's date, start time and duration on the class page.
To show a video in a session's text, paste a link, for example from YouTube or Vimeo, with the editor's video button.
Set a price
Live classes are always paid, because every session has video costs. Set the price in the Pricing tab. You can also hand out discount codes there. See Set prices, discount codes and sales.
Publish the class
Before you can publish, your class needs a name, a description, a banner image, at least one session and a price. The Publish tab shows what's still missing.
- Open the Publish tab.
- Under Session visibility, turn on the sessions learners should see. The class goes live as soon as one session is on.
- Choose the Page options: Show author information and Allow class discussion.
Learners can then enroll. They appear in the Registered students tab as soon as they do.
Teach a session
- A few minutes before the start, open the session: press View live at the top of the class editor, then pick the session.
- Press Start live session and allow your browser to use your camera and microphone.
- Learners can join once you've started. Until then they see Not started.
During the session:
- Use the buttons at the bottom to turn your microphone and camera on and off, and to share your screen.
- Chat/People opens a panel with the chat and the list of people in the session.
- Learners join with their microphone off, so a full class doesn't start with open mics. They can unmute when they want to speak.
- Learners can Raise Hand. Raised hands are listed first in the People panel, and you can lower one hand or press Lower all.
- Keep the tab open: closing or reloading it takes you out of the session. On phones, the screen stays awake while you're in it.
The session stays open while at least one tutor is in it. When the last tutor leaves, it ends for everyone.
Co-teaching? Add the other tutors as collaborators with edit rights. They can start and run sessions too. See Work with collaborators and personas.
After a session
- See who attended in the Registered students tab: it counts the sessions each learner attended.
- Use Message all students there to share follow-up material or remind people of the next session.
Something went wrong?
- "Camera or microphone access was blocked": allow access for this site in your browser settings, then try again.
- "Connection to the live session was lost": check your internet connection and rejoin the session.
- "You joined this session from another device": you can be in a session from one device at a time. Close the session on the other device.
